Sydney J. Bowie

Sydney Johnston Bowie (born July 26, 1865 in Talladega , Alabama , † May 7, 1928 in Birmingham , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the nephew of MP Franklin Welsh Bowdon .

Career

Sydney Johnston Bowie attended private schools and graduated from the University of Alabama Law School at Tuscaloosa in 1885 . He was admitted to the bar on June 1, 1885 and then began to practice in Talladega. He also worked as a clerk in Talladega in 1885 and 1886 . Bowie also had a political career. He was a member of Talladega City Council in 1891. Then he was a member of the Democratic State Executive Committee between 1894 and 1899 . Last year he moved to Anniston, Alabama.

Bowie was elected to the 57th US Congress and re - elected to the two subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1901 to March 3, 1907. He then moved to Birmingham, where he practiced as a lawyer until 1919. During this time he also worked as a car salesman. He was also a member of the Southern Education Board between 1908 and 1909 and the Birmingham Board of Education between 1915 and 1919 . Bowie presided over the State Educational Commission in 1920 . Then in the same year took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . He was also President of the Alabama Tuberculosis Commission between 1920 and 1922 and a member of the State Harbor Commission between 1922 and 1923 . Bowie died in Birmingham in 1928 and was buried there in Elmwood Cemetery .
