John Lawson Burnett

John Lawson Burnett (born January 20, 1854 in Cedar Bluff , Cherokee County , Alabama , † May 13, 1919 in Gadsden , Etowah County , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

John Lawson Burnett visited the community school, Wesleyan Institute in Cave Spring ( Georgia ) and the local high school in Gaylesville . He studied law and graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville ( Tennessee ). He was admitted to the Cherokee County bar in 1876 and then began practicing in Gadsden. Burnett also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1884 and the Alabama Senate in 1886 . He was later elected to the 56th US Congress and re - elected to the ten subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1899 until his death in 1919. During this time he chaired the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization ( 62nd to 65th US Congresses ). He was also a member of the United States Immigration Commission between 1907 and 1910 . He was buried in Forest Cemetery in Gadsden.
