Richmond Pearson Hobson, 1906

Richmond Pearson Hobson (born August 17, 1870 in Greensboro , Hale County , Alabama , † March 16, 1937 in New York City ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Richmond Pearson Hobson attended private schools and Southern University . He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1889 and from the French National School of Naval Design in Paris in 1893 . Hobson served in the US Navy from 1885 to 1903 . During this time he worked as a shipbuilding engineer, writer and lecturer. He was also the special commissioner of the Navy Department for the Buffalo Exposition of 1901 and the Charleston Exposition between 1901 and 1902.

Hobson also had a political career. He was elected to the 60th US Congress and re - elected to the three subsequent US Congresses . In his candidacy in 1916 for a nomination for the 65th US Congress , he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1907 to March 3, 1915.

He then moved to Los Angeles and from there later to New York City. He established the American Alcohol Education Association in 1921 , where he worked as general secretary. Then in 1923 he set up the International Narcotic Education Association , where he held the position of president. He then directed the 1926 World Conference on Narcotic Education , where he served as Secretary General and Chairman of the Board of Directors. The following year he founded the World Narcotic Defense Association , where he served as president.

Hobson was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor in 1933 , which he earned in 1898 for sinking the Merrimac coal transporter . The following year he was promoted to Rear Admiral.

Then he founded the Constitutional Democracy Association in 1935 , where he also served as president. He died a year later in New York City and his body was then transferred to Virginia , where he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Honors

• USS Hobson (DD-464) , Gleaves-class destroyer , was named after him
• The city of Castine, Texas was renamed Hobson
