Henry De Lamar Clayton, Jr. (born February 10, 1857 in Clayton , Alabama , †  December 21, 1929 in Montgomery , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the brother of Congressman Bertram Tracy Clayton from New York .

Career

Henry De Lamar Clayton, Jr. attended community school. He graduated from the Literary Department of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1877 and from its Law Department in 1878 . He was admitted to the bar last year and then started practicing in Clayton. He moved to Eufaula in 1880 , where he continued his practice as a lawyer.

Clayton also had a political career. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1890 and 1891 . Then he served as the federal attorney for the central district of Alabama between 1893 and 1896 . Clayton was elected to the 55th US Congress and re - elected to the eight subsequent US Congresses . He remained in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1897 until his resignation on May 25, 1914. He then moved to Montgomery, where he served as a judge in the Federal District Court for the central and northern districts of Alabama, which he held up to his Death clothed. During his time in the US Congress he chaired the Committee on the Judiciary ( 62nd and 63rd US Congress ) and in 1908 the Democratic National Convention . Then in 1914 he was one of the promoters of the Clayton Antitrust Act , which spoke out against the restriction of the market by a market power. He also led the impeachment proceedings against Charles Swayne , judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida in 1905 , and in 1912 against Robert Wodrow Archbald , a judge in the United States Commerce Court .

Clayton was appointed to the US Senate to fill the vacancy created by the death of Joseph F. Johnston ; however, his appointment was challenged and subsequently withdrawn. He died in Montgomery in 1929; his body was then transferred to Eufaula, where he was buried in Fairview Cemetery .
