Stanley Hubert Dent, Jr. (born August 16, 1869 in Eufaula , Barbour County , Alabama , † October 6, 1938 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Stanley Hubert Dent, Jr. attended community school and graduated from Southern University (later Birmingham Southern College ) in Greensboro, Alabama in 1886 . He then graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville in 1889 . He was admitted to the bar in the same year and then began to practice in Eufaula. He worked there until 1899 when he moved to Montgomery, Alabama.

Dent also had a political career. In 1901 he took part as a delegate to the Alabama Constituent Assembly . He then served as the Montgomery County district attorney between 1902 and 1909 . Dent took part in 1908 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . He was elected to the 61st US Congress and re - elected to the five subsequent US Congresses . There he was active in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1909 to March 3, 1921. During this time he chaired the Committee on Military Affairs ( 65th US Congress ). In his candidacy for the 67th US Congress in 1920 , he suffered a defeat. He then went back to his practice as a lawyer in Montgomery. He was also president of the Alabama Constituent Assembly in 1933 for the repeal of the 18th Amendment . Dent died in Montgomery in 1938 and was buried in Eufaula Cemetery .
