Robert Stell Heflin (born April 15, 1815 near Madison , Morgan County , Georgia , † January 24, 1901 near Wedowee , Randolph County , Alabama ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was the uncle of US Senator James Thomas Heflin .

Career

Robert Stell Heflin pursued scientific studies. He served in the Creek War in 1836 . He then served as a clerk in the Fayette County (Georgia) Superior Court between 1836 and 1840 . Heflin studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1840, and then began practicing in Fayetteville, Georgia. He also worked as a lawyer in Wedowee, Alabama.

Heflin also had a political career. He served in the Georgia Senate in 1840 and 1841 . He then moved to Randolph County, Alabama, in 1844. There he was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1849 and 1860 . He also served in the Alabama Senate last year . Heflin was probate judge in Randolph County for the final year of the American Civil War , a position he held until 1866. He was later elected to the 41st US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871. He died near Wedowee in 1901 and was buried there in Masonic Cemetery .
