Charles Hays
Charles Hays (born February 2, 1834 at Hays Mount near Boligee , Greene County , Alabama , † June 24, 1879 at Myrtle Hall , Greene County, Alabama) was an American politician and officer in the Confederate Army .
Career
Charles Hays was tutored by private tutors where he completed his preparatory studies. He attended the University of Georgia at Athens and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville . Then he ran a cotton plantation and did other agricultural activities.
Hays took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore in 1860 . After the outbreak of the civil war , he enlisted in the Confederate Army , where he last held the rank of major .
He also pursued a political career. In 1867 he participated in the Alabama Constituent Assembly . The following year he served in the Alabama Senate . Hays was elected as a Republican to the 41st US Congress and re - elected to the three subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1877. During this time he chaired the Committee on Agriculture ( 43rd US Congress ).
Hays died in 1879 at his home, Myrtle Hall , in Greene County, Alabama. He was buried in the family cemetery on the Hays Mount Plantation.
