George W. Andrews

George William Andrews (born December 12, 1906 in Clayton , Alabama , † December 25, 1971 in Birmingham , Alabama) was an American politician . He represented the state of Alabama in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Andrews was born on December 12, 1906 in Clayton, where he attended public school. He then graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1928 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then opened a practice in Union Springs , Alabama. Between 1931 and 1943 he was the District Attorney for the Alabama Third Judicial District.

During World War II , he served as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve from January 1943 until his election to Congress. At the time he was stationed on Pearl Harbor and Hawaii . He was elected a Democrat to the 78th Congress to fill the vacancy created by the death of Henry B. Steagall . During his tenure in Congress he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

Andrews was re-elected to Congress 14 more times. His tenure ran from March 14, 1944 until his death on December 25, 1971 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Union Springs.
