William Brockman Bankhead (born April 12, 1874 in Moscow , Lamar County , Alabama , †  September 15, 1940 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

William Bankhead attended the village school. He then graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1893 and from the Georgetown University Law School in Washington in 1895 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in Huntsville, Alabama.

Bankhead also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1900 and 1901 . He also served as the Huntsville District Attorney between 1898 and 1902. Bankhead moved to Jasper in 1905 , where he continued his practice as a lawyer. He was a solicitor in the 14th Judicial District of Alabama from 1910 to 1914 . Last year he ran unsuccessfully for a nomination for the 64th Congress . Then he was elected to the 65th Congress and the eleven subsequent Congresses . Bankhead was a member of the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1917 to September 15, 1940. During this time he chaired the Committee on Rules ( 73rd Congress ). In addition, he was majority leader ( 74th Congress ) and speaker of the House of Representatives (74th to 76th Congress ). Bankhead attended the 1940 Democratic National Convention in Chicago as a delegate . He died in Washington that same year; the funeral service was held in the hall of the US House of Representatives. He was then buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.

William B. Bankhead was the father of Tallulah Bankhead , the son of John H. Bankhead, and brother of John H. Bankhead II , both US Senators . He was also the uncle of US MP Walter W. Bankhead .
