James E. Cobb

James Edward Cobb (born October 5, 1835 in Thomaston , Upson County , Georgia , † June 2, 1903 in East Las Vegas , San Miguel County , New Mexico ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

James Edward Cobb attended public schools and graduated from Emory College , Oxford, Georgia in June 1856 . He studied law and practiced as a lawyer after receiving his license. Cobb moved to Texas in 1857 . After the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, he joined the Confederate Army , where he held the rank of lieutenant in Company F, 5th Texas Regiment . He later served in the Army of Northern Virginia until his capture at the Battle of Gettysburg .

After the war he settled in Tuskegee ( Alabama down), where he worked as a lawyer until the 1874th He then held the post of magistrate between 1874 and 1886. He was re-elected to office in 1886, but was elected to the US Congress before he could take the post again.

Cobb was elected to the 50th US Congress and re - elected to the four subsequent US Congresses. His re-election to the 54th US Congress was successfully challenged by Albert T. Goodwyn . Cobb served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1887 to April 21, 1896. He then returned to his practice as a lawyer in Tuskegee. In 1901 he took part as a delegate to the Alabama Constituent Assembly .

Cobb died in East Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1903, then was transferred to Tuskegee, Alabama, where he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery .
