Burwell Boykin Lewis

Burwell Boykin Lewis (born July 7, 1838 in Montgomery , Alabama , † October 11, 1885 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Burwell Boykin Lewis moved to Mobile, Alabama with his parents . After the death of his parents, he lived with his uncle in Montevallo, Alabama. Lewis attended private school and graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1857 . He studied law in Selma, Alabama, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and then began practicing in Montevallo. During the American Civil War he served in the Confederate Army , where he held the rank of captain in the 2nd Alabama Cavalry .

Lewis also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1870 to 1872 . Then in 1872 he moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he went into the iron and coal business. Lewis was elected to the 44th US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1877. In his candidacy for the subsequent 45th US Congress , he suffered a defeat, but he was re-elected to the 46th US Congress . There he served from March 4, 1879 to October 1, 1880, when he resigned to take up the post as President of the University of Alabama. Lewis held this post until his death in Tuscaloosa in 1885. He was buried there in Evergreen Cemetery .
