Newton Nash Clements

Newton Nash Clements (born December 23, 1837 in Tuscaloosa County , Alabama , † February 20, 1900 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Newton Nash Clements graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1858 . Then he went to Harvard University in 1859 . He studied law , but he never practiced. He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War . He was a captain first in the 26th Alabama Regiment and later in the 50th Alabama Regiment. This was followed by promotions to major , lieutenant colonel and finally colonel .

Clements was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1870 to 1872 and from 1874 to 1878 . During this time he held the post of speaker in 1876, 1877 and 1878 . He was then elected to the 46th US Congress to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Burwell B. Lewis . He suffered a defeat in his candidacy for a nomination for the 47th US Congress . He served in the United States House of Representatives from December 8, 1880 to March 3, 1881. He also pursued agricultural activities, which included cotton production . He died in Tuscaloosa in 1900 and was buried there in Evergreen Cemetery .
