William Bacon Oliver

William Bacon Oliver (born May 23, 1867 in Eutaw , Greene County , Alabama , † May 27, 1948 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a cousin of Sydney Parham Epes , a US MP from Virginia .

William Bacon Oliver attended community school. He graduated from the Verner College Preparatory School in Tuscaloosa in 1883 , from the Academic Department of the University of Alabama in 1887 and from its Law Department in 1889 . He also took a special course in the law school of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1889 . He was admitted to the bar in 1889 and then began to practice in Tuscaloosa. He was appointed solicitor for the Alabama 6th Judicial District in 1898 , a position he held until his resignation in 1909. He then served as Dean of the Law School of the University of Alabama from 1909 until his resignation in 1913.

Oliver also had a political career. He chaired the Democratic Central Committee of Tuscaloosa County for several years . Then he took part in 1924 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . Oliver was elected to the 64th US Congress and re - elected to the ten subsequent US Congresses . In 1936 he decided against running for the 75th US Congress . Oliver served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1915 to March 3, 1937.

He then worked from July 22, 1939 until his resignation on May 1, 1944 as Special Assistant to the Attorney General . Oliver died in 1948 while visiting New Orleans. His body was transferred to Eutaw, where he was buried in Eutaw Cemetery .
