Spencer Thomas Bachus III. (Born December 28, 1947 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Spencer Bachus graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama Law School in Tuscaloosa in 1972 . He also served in the National Guard from 1969 to 1971 . He ran his own law practice and sawmill until 1992.

Bachus also pursued a political career. He served in the Alabama Senate between 1983 and 1984 . He was then a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1984 to 1987 . Bachus was a member of the Alabama Board of Education between 1987 and 1991 . During that time he chaired the Alabama Republican Executive Committee between 1991 and 1992 . He was elected to the 103rd US Congress and re - elected to the ten subsequent US Congresses . Bachus served in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2015.
