Joe Starnes (born March 31, 1895 in Guntersville , Alabama , † January 9, 1962 in Washington, DC ) was an American officer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Joe Starnes attended public schools and taught himself in Marshall County between 1912 and 1917 . During the First World War he served overseas between 1918 and 1919 in the 53rd Infantry , 6th Division , where he held the rank of Second Lieutenant . On his return to the United States, he went to the law school of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa , where he graduated in 1921. He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in Guntersville. He was also a member of the 167th Infantry, Alabama National Guard , since 1923 , where he rose to the rank of Colonel .

Starnes also embarked on a political career. He was a member of the state education committee between 1933 and 1949 and became vice-chairman there in January 1948. He was also elected to the 74th US Congress and re - elected to the four subsequent congresses . In his candidacy for the 79th Congress , he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1935 to January 3, 1945.

Starnes served as a colonel in the infantry in the European theater of war and remained from January 4, 1945 until his discharge on February 22, 1946 in the occupation army. After his return home, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in Guntersville.
