John William Abercrombie

John William Abercrombie (born May 17, 1866 near Kelly's Creek Post Office , St. Clair County , Alabama , † July 2, 1940 in Montgomery , Montgomery County , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

John William Abercrombie attended country schools and then graduated from Oxford College in Alabama in 1886 . He then studied law at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa , where he graduated in 1888. He was admitted to the bar in the same year and then practiced between 1889 and 1890 in Cleburne County, Alabama. Abercrombie served as a college high school director, school inspector, and chancellor from 1888 to 1898 . During this time he was a member of the New York Senate between 1896 and 1898 . He then worked as a state education inspector between 1898 and 1902. He then held the post of Chancellor at the University of Alabama between 1902 and 1911. He was president of the Southern Educational Association in 1906 and 1907 . He was also the organizer and president of the Alabama Association of Colleges between 1908 and 1912 . He was elected as a Democrat in the 63rd and 64th US Congresses , where he served from March 4, 1913 to March 3, 1917. In 1916 he decided against running for the US Congress again . After the end of his tenure, he worked as a solicitor and between 1918 and 1920 as deputy minister in the US Department of Labor. He then held the post of state education inspector between 1920 and 1927.

Abercrombie died in Montgomery in 1940 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery .
