John McDuffie (1920s)

John McDuffie (born September 25, 1883 in River Ridge , Monroe County , Alabama , †  November 1, 1950 in Mobile , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). After his appointment by President Franklin D. Roosevelt , he served from 1935 as a federal judge in the federal district court for the tenth district court for the southern district of Alabama.

Career

John McDuffie received private tutors and attended Southern University in Greensboro . He graduated from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn in 1904 and from the University of Alabama Law School at Tuscaloosa in 1908 . McDuffie also had a political career, serving in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1907 to 1911 . He received his license in 1908 and then practiced in Monroeville . He then served as a prosecutor in the First Judicial District of Alabama between 1911 and 1919.

McDuffie was elected to the 66th Congress and re - elected to the eight subsequent conventions . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1919 until his resignation on March 2, 1935. During that time he held the post of Minority Whip ( 71st Congress ) and Majority Whip ( 72nd Congress ). He also chaired the Committee on Insular Affairs ( 73rd and 74th Congress ).

On January 31, 1935, McDuffie was appointed by President Roosevelt to succeed Robert Tait Ervin as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama . After confirmation by the US Senate , which took place on February 7 of the same year, he was able to take up his office the next day and hold it until his death on November 1, 1950. His seat then fell to Daniel Holcombe Thomas . John McDuffie was buried in Pine Crest Cemetery .
