John H. Bankhead

John Hollis Bankhead (born September 13, 1842 in Moscow , Lamar County , Alabama , † March 1, 1920 in Washington, DC ) was an American businessman and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

John Hollis Bankhead attended community schools and later ran a plantation . During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army , where he held the rank of captain in the Alabama infantry . Bankhead also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1865 to 1867 and from 1880 to 1881 . He also served in the Alabama Senate from 1876 ​​to 1877 .

Bankhead served as a prison warden in Wetumpka between 1881 and 1885 . Last year he moved to Fayette, Alabama, where he again ran a plantation. He then moved to Jasper, Alabama in 1912 .

Bankhead was elected to the 50th US Congress and re - elected to the nine subsequent US Congresses . He then suffered a defeat in the 1906 nomination for the 60th US Congress . Bankhead was a member of the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1887 to March 3, 1907. During this time he chaired the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds ( 52nd and 53rd US Congresses ). He was also a member of the Inland Waterways Commission in 1907 .

Bankhead was nominated and subsequently elected to the US Senate to fill the vacancy created by the death of John T. Morgan . He was confirmed in 1912 and 1918. Bankhead served there from June 18, 1907 until his death in Washington in 1920. During this time he chaired the Committee on Standards, Weights, and Measures ( 62nd US Congress ), Committee on Post Office and Post Roads ( 63rd to 65th US Congress ) and the Committee on Expenditures in the US Home Office ( 66th US Congress ). He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.

John Hollis Bankhead was the father of US Senator John H. Bankhead II and US Congressman William B. Bankhead . He was also the grandfather of US MP Walter W. Bankhead .
