Lamar Jeffers
Lamar Jeffers (born April 16, 1888 in Anniston , Alabama , † June 1, 1983 in Daytona Beach , Florida ) was an American officer and politician ( Democratic Party ).
Life
Lamar Jeffers attended public schools and the Alabama Presbyterian College in Anniston. He served in the Alabama National Guard between 1904 and 1914 . Then he accepted a position as a clerk in the District Court of Calhoun County in January 1917 . He held this post until May 1917 when he joined the US Army , where he served in the 82nd Division in France . During this time he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross . He was also promoted to major in the infantry .
Jeffers was elected to the 67th Congress to fill the vacancy created by the death of MP Fred L. Blackmon . He was re-elected to the 68th US Congress and five subsequent US Congresses . When he ran for the 74th US Congress in 1934 , he suffered a defeat. Jeffers served in the US House of Representatives from June 7, 1921 to January 3, 1935. During this time he chaired the Committee on Civil Service ( 72nd and 73rd US Congresses ). He then returned to Daytona Beach, where he died in 1983. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
