Willis Brewer

Willis Brewer (born March 15, 1844 near Livingston , Sumter County , Alabama , † October 30, 1912 in Montgomery , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Willis Brewer attended a community school. During the American Civil War , he joined the Confederate Army at the age of 18 and served there until the end of the war. He later worked as a journalist , author and plantation owner . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1870, and then began practicing in Haynesville, Alabama. The following year he served as treasurer ( treasurer ) of Lowndes County operates. Then he was state auditor between 1876 and 1880.

Brewer also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives between 1880 and 1882 and between 1890 and 1894 . He also served in the Alabama Senate from 1882 to 1890 and from 1894 to 1897 . He was elected to the 55th US Congress and re - elected to the subsequent 56th US Congress . In his candidacy for the 57th US Congress in 1900 , however, he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1897 to March 3, 1901. After his term of office he resumed his work as a lawyer and author, which he continued until his death in 1912. He was buried in the family mausoleum on Cedars Plantation near Montgomery.
