Alexander White (politician, 1816)

Alexander White (born October 16, 1816 in Franklin , Tennessee , † December 13, 1893 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American lawyer , judge and politician .

Career

Alexander White moved in 1821 with his parents to Courtland ( Alabama ). He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . He then served in the Seminole War in 1836 . The following year he moved to Talladega, Alabama. He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1838 and began practicing in Talladega.

White also had a political career. He was elected as Whig in the 32nd US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1851 to March 3, 1853. Then in 1856 he moved to Selma, Alabama, where he returned to practice as a lawyer. He also took part in the Alabama Constituent Assembly in 1865 . He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1872 . Then he was re-elected as a Republican to the 43rd US Congress . During his re-election attempt in the 44th US Congress , he suffered a defeat. White served in the U.S. House of Representatives from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. At the end of his term, he was appointed associate justice at the United States Court for the Territory of Utah , a post he only held for several months. He then moved to Dallas, Texas in 1876, where he worked as a lawyer again. White died in Dallas in 1893 and was buried there in Greenwood Cemetery.
