George Washington Owen

George Washington Owen (born October 20, 1796 in Brunswick County , Virginia , † August 18, 1837 near Mobile , Alabama ) was an American politician.

Owen was born in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1796. He moved to Tennessee with his parents , attended public schools there and studied law at the University of Nashville . He was inducted into the bar in 1816 and practiced as a lawyer in Claiborne , Alabama. In 1821 his candidacy for a seat in the United States House of Representatives failed . He had previously been a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1819 to 1821 and held the office of Speaker in 1821 . In the next congressional election Owen was able to win a seat and then represented from March 4, 1823 to March 3, 1836 the state of Alabama in the House of Representatives of the United States. In 1836, Owen was elected Mayor of Mobile. He held this office until his death. Owen was buried in Old Church Street Cemetery , Mobile.
