Richard Henry Clarke (born February 9, 1843 in Dayton , Marengo County , Alabama , † September 26, 1906 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Richard Henry Clarke attended Green Springs Academy and then graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in July 1861 . During the American Civil War he served in the Confederate Army , where he held the rank of lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Alabama Artillery . After the war, he studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1867, and then began practicing in Dayton. He later moved to Demopolis, Alabama, where he continued to work as a lawyer. Clarke held a position as a solicitor in Marengo County between 1872 and 1876 . He then served as the 7th District Attorney in Alabama between 1876 and 1877. He then moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he returned to his practice as a lawyer. Clarke was elected to the 51st US Congress and re - elected to the three subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1889 to March 3, 1897. Clarke decided against another candidacy for the US Congress, but made an unsuccessful attempt for the office of governor of Alabama in 1896 . Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer. Clarke was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1900 and 1901 .

Richard Henry Clarke died in St. Louis in 1906, his body was then transferred to Mobile, where he was buried in Magnolia Cemetery .
