George M. Grant (1957)

George McInvale Grant (born July 11, 1897 in Louisville , Barbour County , Alabama , † November 4, 1982 ) was an American politician who represented the state of Alabama in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Grant was born in Louisville, where he also attended public school. Between 1918 and 1919 he was first a simple soldier and later an aviator cadet in the Air Corps of the United States Army . He then went to the University of Alabama , Law Department, in Tuscaloosa , where he graduated in 1922. Grant was admitted to the bar that same year and opened a practice in Troy . Some time later, in 1927, he became a county solicitor for Pike County . He held this position until 1937.

Grant was elected a Democrat to the 75th Congress to succeed the resigned J. Lister Hill . He was re-elected in the 76th and twelve subsequent Congresses. His term of office ran from June 14, 1938 to January 3, 1965. However, he lost his re-election in 1964 to the 89th Congress against Republican William Louis Dickinson . He then started practicing law again.

He lived in Washington, DC until his death aboard Queen Elizabeth 2. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
