Albert Taylor Goodwyn

Albert Taylor Goodwyn (born December 17, 1842 in Robinson Springs , Montgomery County , Alabama , † July 2, 1931 in Birmingham , Alabama) was an American politician ( Populist Party ).

Career

Albert Taylor Goodwyn attended Robinson Springs Academy and South Carolina College in Columbia . During the American Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served there until June 1865. When he was retired at the end of the war, he held the rank of captain in a company of snipers and was awarded a Confederate Cross of Honor . Goodwyn graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1867 . Then he worked as a convict overseer between 1874 and 1880. During this time he was also engaged in agricultural activities.

Goodwyn served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1886 to 1887, and then served in the Alabama Senate from 1892 to 1896 . He successfully challenged the election of James E. Cobb to the 54th US Congress so that he served in the US House of Representatives between April 22, 1896 and March 3, 1897. In his candidacy for the 55th US Congress , however, he suffered a defeat. He was named Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Veterans on May 8, 1928 . In addition, he went back to agricultural activities. He died during a visit to Birmingham in 1931, his body was transferred to Montgomery , where he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
