William Crawford Sherrod

William Crawford Sherrod (born August 17, 1835 in Courtland , Lawrence County , Alabama , † March 24, 1919 in Wichita Falls , Wichita County , Texas ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

William Crawford Sherrod attended Community School, a private preparatory school in Edgefield ( South Carolina ) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1851 and 1852. He then returned to Courtland, where he agricultural pursued activities. Sherrod served in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1859 and 1860 . In 1860 he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Charleston, South Carolina. During the American Civil War he served in the Confederate Army , where he held the rank of colonel under General Forrest . He was elected to the 41st US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871. Sherrod decided against running for the 42nd US Congress in 1870 . Then he went back to agricultural activities. He was also a member of the Alabama Senate in 1875 . He later moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1893, where he ran a farm and raised cattle. He died there in 1919 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery .
