Les Cowboys Fringants are a Québec band that has enjoyed international success in French-speaking countries since the 2000s. Their music is a mix of alternative rock and folk . In addition, they often address socially critical and nationalist-patriotic topics.

history

Karl Tremblay and Jean-François Pauzé originally met in 1994 while playing ice hockey and two years later took part in a small competition under the later band name. The other members joined shortly afterwards. 500 cassettes of their first album 12 Grandes Chansons were sold. The following albums were also produced and sold in-house. It was not until 1999 that they gained a certain prominence through some appearances in Montréal. In 2002 they finally made their breakthrough with Break Syndical . The subsequent tour was a success and the band has now been played on mainstream radio stations as well. In 2004 they gave their first concert in Paris and became known in French-speaking areas outside of Canada. In 2007, however, Lebeau surprisingly left the band for the public and cited as the cause disagreements with the other members.

engagement

The band describes their music as "alternative Québec rock". Historical, political and linguistic references to Québec are correspondingly frequent. In numerous songs they speak out for the independence of their homeland. Her instrument repertoire also indicates her commitment to the revival of traditional folklore.

The Cowboys Fringants are often critical of society and globalization, taking political left-wing positions. However, they occasionally mock the left protest culture with irony.

In addition, the band is committed to environmental protection. In order to offset the CO 2 emissions during their 2008 tour, 35,000 trees were planted.
