Henry Washington Hilliard (born August 4, 1808 in Fayetteville , North Carolina , †  December 17, 1892 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Henry Hilliard graduated from South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina ) in Columbia in 1826 . He studied law . Then he moved to Athens, Georgia, where he was admitted to the bar in 1829. Hilliard was a professor at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa from 1831 until his resignation in 1834 . He then moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where he resumed his practice as a lawyer.

Hilliard also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1836 to 1838 . Then he took as a delegate at the 1839 Whig National Convention in Harrisburg ( Pennsylvania part). The following year he ran as the presidential elector for the Whig Party. Hilliard ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the 27th US Congress in 1840 . He then held the position of Chargé d'Affaires in Belgium from May 12, 1842 to August 15, 1844 . On his return to the United States , he was elected as Whig in the 29th US Congress and re - elected to the two subsequent US Congresses . Hilliard decided against running for the 32nd US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1851. He then stood in 1856 as a presidential elector for the National American Party.

During the Civil War he served as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army . Hilliard moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1865 , where he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He was named Confederate Commissioner of Tennessee by Jefferson Davis .

Hilliard ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for a seat in the 45th US Congress in 1876 . He then went back to his practice as a lawyer in Augusta, but later moved to Atlanta. Hilliard served as an envoy to Brazil between 1877 and 1881 . He died in Atlanta in 1892; his body was transferred to Montgomery, where he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
