William J. Alston

William Jeffreys Alston (born December 31, 1800 in Milledgeville , Baldwin County , Georgia , † June 10, 1876 in Magnolia , Marengo County , Alabama ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician ( Whig Party ).

Career

William Jeffreys Alston attended private school in South Carolina . Then he moved to Alabama and settled in Marengo County. There he worked as a teacher for several years. He studied law , was admitted to the bar, and then began practicing in Linden, Alabama , in 1821 . He later served for several years as a judge on the Marengo County Court.

Alston also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1837 . He then served in the Alabama Senate between 1839 and 1842 . Alston was elected to the 31st US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1849 to March 3, 1851. He did not stand for re-election in 1850. He then resumed his practice as a lawyer. Alston was re-elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1855. He also pursued agricultural activities. He died in Magnolia (Alabama) in 1876 and was buried there in Magnolia Cemetery .
