William Winter Payne

William Winter Payne (born January 2, 1807 in Warrenton , Fauquier County , Virginia , † September 2, 1874 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

William Winter Payne completed his preparatory studies and studied law , but never practiced as a lawyer. In 1825 he moved to Franklin County , Alabama , where he was engaged in farming . He also chose to pursue a political career when he became a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1831 . He then moved to Sumter County . He was subsequently a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama between 1834 and 1838 and again in 1840. During this time, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Alabama Senate in 1839 .

Payne was elected to the 27th US Congress and re - elected to the two subsequent US Congresses . He worked there from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1847. During this time he chaired the Committee on Elections ( 28th US Congress ). In his third attempt at re-election in 1846 in the 30th US Congress , he suffered a defeat. At the end of his tenure he returned to Virginia in 1847, where he went back to agricultural activities near Warrenton. He also chaired the 1859 Democratic Convention in Alabama.
