Henry Bascom Steagall (born May 19, 1873 in Clopton , Dale County , Alabama , † November 22, 1943 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Henry Bascom Steagall attended Community School and the Southeast Alabama Agricultural School at Abbeville . He graduated from the University of Alabama Law School at Tuscaloosa in 1893 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in Ozark, Alabama. He then served as a Dale County solicitor between 1902 and 1908 . He was also a public prosecutor in the 3rd judicial district between 1907 and 1914.

Steagall also had a political career. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1906 and 1907 . He was also a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee between 1906 and 1910 . Steagall attended the 1912 Democratic National Convention as a delegate . He was elected to the 64th US Congress and re - elected to the fourteen subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1915 until his death in 1943 in Washington, DC During this time he chaired the Committee on Banking and Currency ( 72nd to 78th US Congresses ). He was a co-submitter of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1932 .
