George Paul Harrison
George Paul Harrison (born March 19, 1841 on the Monteith Plantation near Savannah , Chatham County , Georgia , † July 17, 1922 in Opelika , Lee County , Alabama ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).
Career
George Paul Harrison attended Effingham Academy and the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta . He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War . There he held the rank of second lieutenant with the First Georgia Regulars at the beginning of the war . He was promoted several times during the war, most recently to Brigadier General . He moved to Alabama in 1865. There he studied law , was admitted to the bar and then began practicing in Auburn, Alabama.
Harrison also had a political career. In 1875 he attended the Alabama Constituent Assembly . He then served in the Alabama Senate from 1878 to 1884 , where he was its president from 1882 to 1884. Harrison attended the Democratic National Convention in 1892 as a delegate . He was elected to the 53rd US Congress to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William C. Oates . Harrison was re-elected to the 54th US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from November 6, 1894 to March 3, 1897. Then he went back to his work as a lawyer in Opelika (Alabama). He participated in the Alabama Constituent Assembly in 1901. He also served as General Counsel ( general counsel ) for the Western Railway of Alabama worked as a department and General Counsel ( division counsel ) for the Central of Georgia Railway .
Harrison died in Opelika in 1922 and was buried there in Rosemere Cemetery .
