John Henry Caldwell

John Henry Caldwell (born April 4, 1826 in Huntsville , Madison County , Alabama , † September 4, 1902 in Jacksonville , Calhoun County , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

John Henry Caldwell attended the Community School of Huntsville and Bacon College in Harrodsburg ( Kentucky ). He then taught in Limestone County, Alabama for four years . Caldwell moved to Jacksonville in 1848, where he worked as a principal , first at the Jacksonville Female Academy between 1848 and 1852 and then at the Jacksonville Male Academy between 1853 and 1857 . He also published the Jacksonville Republican in 1851 and 1852 and in 1855 took over the management of Sunny South .

Caldwell served in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1857 and 1858 . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1859, and then began practicing in Jacksonville.

During the American Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army , where he set up Company A of the 10th Alabama Regiment from St. Clair and Calhoun Counties and served throughout the war. Caldwell last held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . He served in the Army of Virginia .

He was also elected solicitor of the 10th Judicial District in 1863 , but was removed from office in 1865 by the Provisional Governor . He was re-elected to office in the same year, but was relieved of office again in 1867 because he refused to obey military orders.

Caldwell was elected to the 43rd US Congress and re - elected to the subsequent US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1877. During this time he chaired the Committee on Agriculture ( 44th US Congress ). He then resumed his practice as a lawyer.
