Jacksonville is a city in Calhoun County , Alabama . At the 2000 US census , the city had 8,404 residents. It is located in the Anniston-Oxford metropolitan area.

history

Jacksonville was founded as Drayton in 1833. However, it was renamed in 1834 after Andrew Jackson , the US President. There are several memorials to the Civil War in the city , including a statue of officer John Pelham . Until 1899, the city was the county seat of Calhoun County before it was moved to Anniston .

Eight structures and sites in Jacksonville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of July 5, 2019, including the Downtown Jacksonville Historic District .

At the 2000 Census, Jacksonville had 8,404 residents, 3,274 households, and 1,735 families. The population density was 393.3 inhabitants per km². 76.2% of the population were white and 20.18% were African-Americans . 16.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 12% were 65 years or older. Overall, the average age was 26 years, which is well below the American average of 32.3 years. 47.1% of the population were male and 52.9% were female.
