John Merle Coulter (born November 20, 1851 in Ningbo , † December 23, 1928 in Yonkers , New York ) was an American botanist and founding editor of the Botanical Gazette . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ JMCoult. "

Life

John Merle Coulter, like his brother Stanley Coulter, was born to missionaries in China, but received his education at Hover College in Indiana , where his widowed mother had returned in 1853. From 1872 to 1873 he worked as a botanist for the United States Geological Survey in the Rocky Mountains and then taught science at his old college before he became a professor of biology at Wabash College in Crawfordsville in 1879 . In 1882 he received his Ph.D. from Indiana University. (Doctor of Philosophy) PhD. From 1891 to 1893 he served as president of Indiana University, and from 1893 to 1896 he was president of Lake Forest College, Illinois . In 1896 he took over the management of the botanical department at the University of Chicago . In 1909 he survived along with his wife Georgia and the children Grace and Merle the sinking of the White Star -Schiffes RMS Republic before Nantucket , in which six people were killed. In 1925 he moved to Yonkers in New York, from where he was involved in setting up the Boyce Thompson Institute of Botany in Ithaca , of which he was director of the institute.

Honors

In 1898 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1909 to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1915 to the American Philosophical Society . In 1920 the University of Indiana awarded him an honorary degree from the law school. Vasey and Rose described the genus Coulterella from the Asteraceae family , BL Robinson the genus Coulterophytum from the umbelliferous family in his honor.
