Crawfordsville is a city in the US state of Indiana with about 15,000 residents. It is the county seat of Montgomery County .

history

When French traders and missionaries were the first whites to come to what is now Crawfordsville, it was inhabited by various Indian tribes, including Miami and Shawnee . During the British-American War from 1812 onwards, some tribes sided with the British. In 1813, members of the American army advanced into the area still held by Indians. They found densely forested land and raw materials such as clay and slate . Due to the Treaty of St. Mary’s (German: Treaty of St. Mary’s ) of 1817, land was ceded by the Indian tribes and permanent settlement of the area began around 1823.

Many of the early settlers came from Kentucky , Virginia , North Carolina, and Ohio . One of the reasons for settling in Crawfordsville was the level of legal certainty that existed here with regard to the once acquired land ownership, which was less pronounced in other areas and therefore often led to legal disputes. In 1834 the place was finally registered as a municipality.

In the middle of the 19th century, Crawfordsville became a transportation hub and trading center with the railroad opening up the area. Among other things, weaving mills , tanneries and brickworks were established in the city . Wabash College was established in 1832 and is only open to male students to this day. In 1860 the place had 1922 inhabitants. In 1882 a telephone network was put into operation in Crawfordsville and in 1890 the place received its own power station.

Crawfordsville is home to the General Lew Wallace Study , a building that was used as a study by author Lew Wallace and was registered as a National Historic Landmark in 1976 .
