Army of Virginia

The Army of Virginia (Virginia Army) was a major unit of the US Army . It existed from June 26 to September 12, 1862.

During the civil war it was customary to name larger army units after the areas in which they were mainly active. The Virginia Army was used exclusively in the north of the state during its short existence.

Its commander in chief was Major General Pope .

It consisted of three corps under General Sigel , Banks and McDowell . After the Second Battle of Manassas , the army was incorporated into the Potomac Army on September 12, 1862 .
