James T. Jones

James Taylor Jones (born July 20, 1832 in Richmond , Virginia , † February 15, 1895 in Demopolis , Marengo County , Alabama ) was an American lawyer, judge, officer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

James Taylor Jones moved to Marengo County with his father in 1834. There he later pursued classical subjects. He graduated from Princeton College in 1852 and from the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville in 1855 . He was admitted to the bar in 1856 and then began to practice in Demopolis.

After the outbreak of the American Civil War , he enlisted in the Confederate Army , where he initially held the rank of private in the 4th Alabama Regiment . There he was promoted to captain of Company D in 1862 . Then he was appointed a legal officer in the Confederate War Department in 1864 and held this post until the end of the war.

Jones also had a political career. In 1865 he took part as a delegate to the Alabama Constituent Assembly . Then he was a member of the Alabama Senate in 1872 and 1873 . He then ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the 44th US Congress in 1874 , but was then elected to the 45th US Congress . In his re-election attempt in 1878 in the 46th US Congress , he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1879. He was later elected to the 48th US Congress to fill the vacancy created by the death of Thomas H. Herndon . He was re-elected to the two subsequent US Congresses. Jones served there from December 3, 1883 to March 3, 1889. He decided against running for the 51st US Congress and resumed his practice as a lawyer in Demopolis after his term was up.

Jones held the post of magistrate in the First Judicial District of Alabama from 1890 until his death in 1895. He was buried in the Lyon Cemetery .
