Ariosto A. Wiley

Ariosto Appling Wiley (born November 6, 1848 in Clayton , Barbour County , Alabama , † June 17, 1908 in Hot Springs , Bath County , Virginia ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the brother of US MP Oliver Cicero Wiley .

Career

Ariosto Appling Wiley moved to Troy, Alabama with his parents . There he attended community school and then graduated from Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia in 1870 . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1871, and then began practicing in Clayton, Alabama. In the same year he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where he continued his practice as a lawyer. He also served as a captain in the Alabama National Guard's cavalry and later commanded the Alabama National Guard's 2nd Infantry Regiment as Lieutenant Colonel .

Wiley also had a political career. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives for 1884, 1885, 1888, 1889, 1896, and 1897 . He also served in the Alabama Senate from 1890 to 1893 and from 1898 to 1899 . On June 9, 1898, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the 5th Regiment of the United States Volunteer Infantery by US President McKinley and then served in the Spanish-American War . He was legal advisor and chief of staff General Henry W. Lawton in Santiago ( Cuba ) working and then assisted General Leonard Wood in the establishment of a civilian government in the eastern province. Wiley attended the Democratic National Convention in 1888 . He was elected to the 57th US Congress and re - elected to the three subsequent US Congresses , where he worked from March 4, 1901 until his death in 1908 in Hot Springs, Virginia. Wiley was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.
