Sonny Callahan

Herbert Leon "Sonny" Callahan (born September 11, 1932 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Sonny Callahan graduated from McGill Institute High School in Mobile, Alabama, in 1950 . Then he attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa between 1959 and 1960 . He was also active in the US Navy between 1952 and 1954 and then as a businessman. Callahan served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1971 to 1979 . He was then a member of the Alabama Senate between 1979 and 1983 . He ran unsuccessfully in 1982 for the Democratic nomination for the office of lieutenant governor of Alabama. He was then elected as a Republican to the 99th Congress and re - elected to the eight subsequent US Congresses . He did not run for the 108th US Congress in 2002 .

2001 awarded him the United States Sports Academy in Daphne the honorary doctorate .
