Daphne is a city in Baldwin County in the US state of Alabama , United States with 25,913 residents (as of 2016 estimate). The metropolitan region has around 209,000 inhabitants. The city area is 36.5 km². The 914 m long George Wallace Tunnel passes under the Mobile River and connects Daphne with Mobile , Alabama.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, Daphne had 16,581 residents, spread across 6,563 households and 4,670 families. The population density was thus 475.3 inhabitants / km². 85.33% of the population were white and 12.35% were African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 34.2% of households. The median income was $ 52,603 ​​per household, with 4.5% of the population living below the poverty line .

history

Daphne has been around since the mid-16th century during the time of the Spanish explorations. The parish of Daphne was established in 1763, at which time it was often called "the Village" . The city was officially founded in April 1874 when the Daphne post office opened. Daphne was the county seat of Baldwin County until the mid-18th century when it had to be surrendered to Bay Minette , where it is still today. In 1972 the United States Sports Academy was founded. From 1990 the population of the place grew strongly.

Eight structures and sites in Daphne are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 30, 2019, including the Malbis Plantation .
