The George Wallace Tunnel is a tunnel in Mobile , Alabama and crosses under the Mobile River . Two lanes of Interstate 10 run in the two tunnel tubes .
The segments of the tunnel - like those of the smaller Bankhead Tunnel - were built a few blocks upstream between 1969 and 1973 on the shipyard of the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO).
The individual tunnel segments were then brought to the place of use, flooded at their final location and connected to one another under water. They were later drained again and the interior was completed.
Tunnel portals
On the west side the George C. Wallace Tunnel emerges as well as the Bankhead Tunnel under Royal Street in the center of Mobile; In contrast to the older structure, which flows into Government Street at the same level, the George C. Wallace Tunnel leads up to a pillar-built elevated road on which Interstate 10 runs over the streets of Mobile.
At its eastern end on Blakeley Island, the tunnel also leads up a ramp, where it is connected to the bridge on which the I-10 leads east over Mobile Bay .
Fort Condé
During the construction of the tunnel and a few other new buildings, the foundations of Fort Condé , which was demolished in the 19th century and which stretch a few blocks from the river along Water Street and Commerce Street, were discovered on the construction site . After the excavation pits around the tunnel tubes were backfilled, a replica of the former fortress was built.
