99th United States Congress
The 99th Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative term lasted from January 3, 1985 to January 3, 1987. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class II ) were elected on November 6, 1984 in the congressional elections. This resulted in a majority in the Senate for the Republican Party, while the Democratic Party won a majority in the House of Representatives. Congress met in the American capital Washington, DC The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1980 census .
Important events
- January 3, 1985 the new Congress begins its work.
- January 20, 1985: President Ronald Reagan inducted into his second term.
- January 28, 1986: The Challenger accident is the worst accident in the history of space travel in the United States. All seven astronauts die in the process.
- April 15, 1986: American air strikes on cities in Libya in retaliation for the attack on the La Belle discotheque in Berlin on April 5, 1986 ( Operation El Dorado Canyon ).
- October 21, 1986: The Association Agreement with the Marshall Islands comes into force.
- November 3, 1986: The Association Agreement with Micronesia enters into force.
- November 3, 1986: The Iran-Contra affair becomes known.
- November 4, 1986: Congressional elections in the United States. The Democrats win a majority in both chambers of Congress.
