James A. McClure

James Albertus "Jim" McClure (born December 27, 1924 in Payette , Payette County , Idaho ; † February 26, 2011 in Garden City , Idaho) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Idaho in both chambers of the Congress represented.

Life

After attending public schools in his hometown of Payette, James McClure joined the US Navy at the age of 18 to fight in World War II . He remained in the military from 1942 to 1946; during that time he attended the Naval Program at the University of Idaho , graduating in 1943. After leaving the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Idaho in Moscow , where he passed his law exam in 1950.

From 1950 to 1956, McClure was a prosecutor in Payette County; he also served as a trial attorney for the city of Payette between 1953 and 1966. During this time he also served in the Idaho Senate from 1961 to 1966 . In 1966 he stood in the first congressional electoral district of the state against the Democratic Congressman Compton I. White Jr. and was victorious, whereupon he could take his seat in the US House of Representatives on January 3, 1967. He was re-elected in 1968 and 1970.

When US Senator Len Jordan did not run again in 1972, McClure successfully applied for his successor. He defeated the Democrat William E. Davis and moved to the Senate on January 3, 1973 within Congress, where he remained until January 3, 1991 after two safe re-elections. In 1984 he sought the election to the majority leader , but was defeated by Bob Dole from Kansas. During his 18-year tenure, McClure was chairman of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources from 1981 to 1987 . In this role, he advocated the use of electric cars at an early stage and promoted the independence of the United States in questions of energy supply. From 1981 to 1985 he was also the Senate Republican Conference Chairman .

In 1990 McClure decided against running again; he was succeeded by Congressman Larry Craig . After leaving the Senate, he stayed in Washington , where he worked as a political advisor and lobbyist . He later returned to Idaho, where he has lived in McCall ever since . In December 2008, McClure suffered a stroke from which he recovered. The courthouse in Boise , Idaho's capital , has been named the James A. McClure Federal Building and United States Courthouse in honor of longtime Senator since 2001 .
