Jacob K. Shafer

Jacob K. Shafer (born December 26, 1823 at Broadway , Rockingham County , Virginia , † November 22, 1876 in Eureka , Nevada ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the Idaho Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Jacob Shafer attended Washington College in Lexington until 1843 , which later became Washington and Lee University . He then studied law in Staunton until 1846 . After moving to Stockton , California , he began working as a lawyer there. In 1850 he became a district attorney in the fifth legal district of California. In 1852 he became mayor of Stockton; from 1853 to 1862 he was a district judge in San Joaquin County .

Political career

Jacob Shaver moved to the Idaho Territory in 1863. He was a member of the Democratic Party and was elected to this 1868 as a delegate to the US House of Representatives, where he replaced Edward Dexter Holbrook on March 4, 1869 . For the elections of 1870 Shafer was no longer nominated by his party. So he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871 .

After the end of his political activities in the federal capital Washington Shafer returned to the Idaho Territory, where he worked again as a lawyer. He later moved to Eureka, Nevada, where he died in 1876.
