Willis Sweet

Willis Sweet (born January 1, 1856 in Alburgh , Vermont , †  July 9, 1925 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ) was an American politician . Between 1890 and 1895 he represented the first constituency of the state of Idaho in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Willis Sweet attended his homeland public schools and then the University of Nebraska at Lincoln . In this city he also trained as a printer. In September 1881 he moved to Moscow , Idaho Territory . After studying law, he began working as a lawyer in this city in 1889.

Political career

Sweet was a member of the Republican Party . In 1888 he was appointed federal attorney for the Idaho Territory. Between 1889 and 1890 he was a judge in the first legal district of this area. Sweet was also the first president of the University of Idaho between 1889 and 1893 . After Idaho joined the United States as a state, Willis Sweet was elected as the first member of the new state to the US House of Representatives. After a few re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate between October 1, 1890 and March 3, 1895. In 1894 he decided not to run again. Two years later, Sweet ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate .

Another résumé

In the following years Willis Sweet worked as a lawyer in Coeur d'Alene . From 1903 to 1905 he was Attorney General of Puerto Rico. There he published a newspaper in the capital San Juan from 1913 until his death in 1925.
