The geographic coordinates of the city are 46 ° 43'54 "N, 116 ° 59'50" W. The urban area is 790 m above sea level and extends over 15.9 km² . The city is located in a valley between the mountains of the Palouse Range (1,500 m) and the Paradise Ridge (1,100 m). The nearest city is Pullman, Washington, 8 miles to the west. Because of the fertile soil, the area around Moscow and Pullman is also called the bread basket of the northwest .
history
The first settlers came in 1869 and named the area Hog Heaven . With the opening of the first post office in 1872, the parish was called Paradise Valley , but the name was eventually changed to Moscow in 1875. The name was not given by Russian immigrants: five settlers, who could not agree on the name, commissioned the postmaster to choose a name for the settlement. He suggested Moscow, as the name stands for brotherly love .
When the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Railway (now the Union Pacific ) opened in 1885, many new settlers came to the town. This development intensified with the opening of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1890. In that year the place already had 2,000 inhabitants.
When the new US state of Washington was formed and many residents of the region wanted to become part of this state, the government of the Idaho Territory had to create incentives to keep the region in Idaho. Therefore, in 1889 the University of Idaho was established in Moscow, which enrolled the first students in 1892. In Pullman, only 12 km away, the new state of Washington founded a university at the same time , the Washington State University .
