Clement Leroy "Butch" Otter (born May 3, 1942 in Caldwell , Idaho ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was governor of the US state of Idaho from 2007 to 2019 . Until the end of 2006, Otter was a member of the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Otter attended the former Boise Junior College ( Boise State University ). He completed his studies in political science in 1967 with a bachelor's degree .

His political career began in 1972 when he moved into the Idaho House of Representatives , to which he was a member until 1976. In 1978 he applied for his party's nomination for the gubernatorial election, but was defeated by Allan Larsen , who in turn lost to the Democratic incumbent John V. Evans .

Between 1987 and 2001 he served as lieutenant governor of his home state.

In the 2000 election , Otter ran as a Republican candidate in Idaho's 1st Congressional electoral district after the candidate , Republican Helen Chenoweth-Hage , failed to run for re-election. He won clearly against the Democrat Linda Pall and was from January 3, 2001 a member of the House of Representatives in Washington , in which he completed three legislative terms.

In November 2006, he was elected 32nd Governor of Idaho with a 52% vote against Democrat Jerry Brady. He took up this position in January 2007. In the gubernatorial election in November 2010 Otter won again and was elected for a second term, in the election on November 4, 2014 , Governor Otter aspired to win a third term with 54.5 percent of the vote against the Democrat AJ Balukoff . Idaho has no constitutional limit on terms of office. In the 2018 election, Otter was no longer a candidate, Brad Little was elected as his successor, who took office on January 6, 2019.
