DW Davis

David William Davis (born April 23, 1873 in Cardiff , Wales ; † August 5, 1959 in Boise , Idaho ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Idaho from 1919 to 1923 .

Early years and political advancement

David William Davis came to the United States with his parents in 1875. The family settled in Rippey , Iowa . At the age of twelve he started working in the coal mining industry to support his widowed mother. He then worked for a farmers' association and as a bank teller. In the meantime he was a member of the US Navy for a short time . He was stationed in the Philippines . After serving in the military, Davis moved to American Falls , Idaho, where he founded the First National Bank of American Falls .

Davis became a member of the Republican Party . In 1912 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention . Davis was a member of the Idaho Senate from 1913 to 1915 . In 1916 he applied unsuccessfully for the office of governor. Two years later, he made it to the highest government office in Idaho.

Governor of Idaho

After re-election in 1920, D. W. Davis was able to rule as governor between January 6, 1919 and January 1, 1923. During this time, an independent financial administration was established in Idaho. A welfare program has been developed for veterans of past wars and a new teacher pension system has been introduced. The expansion of the roads was driven forward against the background of the increasing volume of traffic. Administration has been simplified by amalgamating some authorities. Some laws were revised and the state constitution received three new amendments.

After his governorship ended, Davis worked for the United States Department of the Interior until 1932 . In 1931 he was also an adviser to President Herbert C. Hoover for some time . D. W. Davis died in August 1959 and was buried in Boise. He was married twice and had three children in total.
