HC Baldridge

H. Clarence Baldridge (born November 24, 1868 in Carlock , McLean County , Illinois ; † June 8, 1947 in Parma , Idaho ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Idaho from 1927 to 1931 .

Early years and political advancement

Baldridge attended his homeland public schools in Illinois and Illinois Wesleyan University . He then worked as a teacher and grain dealer in Carlock. After moving to Idaho, he went into politics. He became a member of the Republican Party . From 1911 to 1913 he was a member of the Idaho House of Representatives , and in 1913 he was a member of the Idaho Senate for a period . In 1916 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention . In 1922 Clarence Baldridge was elected the new lieutenant governor of his state. So he was between 1923 and 1927 Deputy Governor Charles C. Moore , to whose successor he was elected in the gubernatorial elections of 1926.

Governor of Idaho

Clarence Baldridge took up his new office on January 3, 1927 and was able to exercise it until January 5, 1931 after a re-election in 1928. During this time a so-called "Prison Farm" was founded, where first-time offenders could serve their sentences. The state constitution was supplemented by an amendment in which state control over the use of hydropower was established. A mineral oil tax was also introduced during this period. The final year of Baldridge's governorship was overshadowed by the Great Depression, which also left its mark on Idaho. In this context, an economic symposium was held with the aim of keeping the finances of the state under control and safeguarding jobs.

Another résumé

After the end of his governorship, Baldridge devoted himself to his private interests. Between 1943 and 1945 he was the commissioner for income from welfare programs. The ex-governor died in June 1947 and was buried in Parma. He had two children with his wife Cora McCreighton.
